Poppins Book Nook Dinosaur Detective Fun - Enchanted Homeschooling Mom

Welcome to the third installment of the Poppins Book Nook!  This wonderful free book club includes a lot of your favorite bloggers and will be taking a themed monthly topic and selecting a book that is appropriate to the theme.  Then, on the last Monday of the month we will all present our books and something homeschooling related, like a craft, project, diagram, report, collage, etc. directly related to the book on our blogs through the Poppins Book Nook.  These will not be planned out, or mapped, or set items that you need to create, it is simply up to the participant to reach into their bag of tricks and secrets and share something themed related to the boll that they selected.  The age range of each project will also be selected by the participant so it can range from Pre-K to 12th, the sky is the limit.  Please make sure to follow along with the Poppins Book Nook on Facebook!

I hope that you and your children had fun learning about what all the other participants are doing with regards to dinosaurs this month. Last month was wizards, so this month’s new fantasy realm is that of dinosaurs!  Since last month focused on Beck, this month I thought I would tackle dinosaurs with both Elizabeth and Beck together.  To explore dinosaurs Beck and Elizabeth picked the storybook: The Berenstain Bears and the Missing Dinosaur Bone by Stan and Jan Berenstain.

In this book, the bears use their detective skills to solve the mystery of the missing dinosaur bone. They wander all around the museum in hopes of find the lost dinosaur bones.  Since I always love it and think that it is good practice, Beck usually volunteers to read the story to his sister, Elizabeth, but in this case, Little Moo-Moo (aka Jessie from Toy Story, our youngest and the only puppy of 4 dogs) and Daisy wanted to listen too as the children read through the book on their trusty pillow pets.

A part of this month’s fun I included two dinosaur themed games to play this month.  The first is called ‘It’s a Dino Party Detective Game.’  In this game the kids had fun following a trail of clues on their journey to find the missing dinosaur bones.  As part of the game you need to create two magnifying glasses.  When you are done they should look like this:

So, with the magnifying glasses built it was time to set-up our clue route and start to solve the case of the missing dinosaur bone.  Here is Elizabeth rolling the die on her turn, trying to get to the finish line before Beck.

And here is Beck trying to read what they clue says through his magnifying glass.

All-in-all I would have to say that Beck and Elizabeth loved this storybook!

The second game that I developed with this Poppins Book Nook event s is a memory style matching game.  Once you complete your research and layout all the pieces, it is then a race to see who can get the most dinosaur name/feature card pairs first.  At the end of game I have also provided individual sheets where they can draw what they think all the dinosaurs looked liked based on what they know about dinosaurs.
