This month’s new theme is forest and woods themed storybooks and is sure to have a lot of variety and fun for everyone since there is a lot of variety to be had from the numerous stories and tales about forests and woods. There is sure to be some storybook fun for every child out there at every reading level for forest and woods.

Yet again, this month our local library left us with a lot of hard decisions to make because the month’s theme of Forest and Woods themed books is such a diverse topic and there are so many to choose from. While looking around, one in particular really caught our eye.  The forest and woods themed storybook that caught our eye was The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. This fun storybook follows a mouse through the woods on an adventurous journey that is fun for children of all ages. Make sure to also read my review of The Gruffalo DVD’s while you are here!

Gruffalo Storybook

This month we dove into the world of forests and woods with The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. The adventurous book is full of the vivid imagery of the mouse’s journey and story as he wanders through the forest. Why not check out a fun video trailer for The Gruffalo below…

If you agree that this storybook is not only cute and fun, but also a great read, then why not also add a hands-on learning activity to your lesson. With that in mind, why not check out my new, and FREE, Gruffalo Inspired Spelling Sensory Bin. I was inspired to create this activity by these super cool Spelling Mats by Happy Brown House (make sure to check them out and purchase them today!). These cards have been a huge hit in my house with some children I have been teaching over the summer break. I decided to put my own spin onto my spelling cards and make it a hands-on learning activity worthy of The Gruffalo.

The first step is to make your green colored rice. There are a lot of ways to do this, but my personally favorite is a very easy recipe by Powerful Mothering. I was amazed at how easy it is to make the colored rice with only rice and food coloring, not to mention how quickly it is ready to use.
