The summer is here and this is a great beach themed book gross motor activity to do. My girls love doing these book gross motor activities. It is a fun way to bring the book to life.
We used the book There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Shell! for this activity. We really enjoy this book series. The words from the book give you lots of time to practice the gross motor movements. Each of the items from the book has a movement and you can repeat the movements as you read the book.
Gross Motor Movements
This first time we do this activity we review the movement and do them with the book. Yes that means each time you read Old Lady you do the movement and them move on. This gives you loads of gross motor and lots of laughs as well.
Old Lady: You walk slowly across the room. This is a challenge to see how slow they can walk.
Shell: You rock around on your back on the ground.
Crab: You crab walk around the room .
Fish: You pretend to swim on the floor.
Gull: You pretend to be a bird and flap wings.
Pail: You pretend to scoop sand up.
Sand: You walk on your tip toes across the room.
Wave: You wave your arms side to side.
Sandcastle: You practice sitting still for 15 seconds.
Using the Dice for the Activity
I cut up the first page of the 3 part cards and put the in the photo dice.
I love to use the photo dice when I can. This gives them something semi safe to roll in a room. Plus it is easy to change out the pictures around.
6 of the pictures fit really easy into the die. This means you can switch up the nine pictures. You might find some gross motor movements work better for your kids than others.
