How can I expand my child’s learning experience with this storybook?
I decided after reading this storybook and looking over the several review questions that are provided in the back of this book that I wanted to expand our learning adventure into Bear Country’s history even further. I decided to make a patriotic themed reading comprehension and discussion sensory bin!
What will I need?
To make this sensory bin exploring the patriotic theme of the storybook you will need the following materials:
- Red, White, and Blue Colored Rice (I personally prefer this super easy recipe by Powerful Mothering)
- Berenstain Bears God Bless Our Country story stickers (provided with this storybook)
- Sensory Bin
- Foam (We used blue colored foam)
- Glitter Pom-Pom’s that look like sparklers!
First, you will need to make your red and blue colored rice. I followed this Colored Rice recipe from Powerful Mothering and created my rice the night before I wanted to do this activity with my kids.
The morning of the activity I placed the stickers from the book onto a sheet of blue foam. I then cut out the stickers in a circular shape. The best part about using the stickers on the foam is that my kids and I found that we were able to place the stickers inside of our book when this activity was done. We found that the foam we used did not ruin the backing of the stickers!
Next was on to the learning activity! When I set up the sensory bin I poured in the red rice, white rice, and blue rice individually, knowing that the colors would, without a doubt, get mixed up together throughout the activity. I buried the foam sticker discs into the rice. When one of my children found a story disc I would have them tell me about that part of the story we just read. Then I would lead the conversation into how that relates to our nation’s history, which would then lead to lengthy conversations on what they know about our country’s history, as well as questions that they hadn’t thought about before.
Hopefully you and your children or students can have as much fun as we did using this hands-on learning with sensory bins focusing on the history of our country inspired by the storybook The Berenstain Bears God Bless Our Country by Mike Berenstain!
