I have one little girl who just loves to wiggle and squirm. I’m always looking for new ways to get her wiggles out and challenge her at the same time. She needs a lot more movement than my other girls.
If you have seen my post Balance Cushion Activities, then you know that we use them often. This post is for those that need a challenge with their movement. It is a simple change just to add a second balance cushion and have a foot on each one. This challenges their balance and coordination as they try movements they know with a slight change.
For this activities I would start with making sure you kids know where the center of the cushion is. Then make sure their foot is there. They may move their foot around as you do the activity, but try and have them keep their foot in the middle. Adjustments can be made as you go along with the activity.
Passing the Ball Around the Body
This is an easy thing to do standing or just two feet on a balance cushion. What makes this different is that you now have to balance one foot on each cushion. As you move the ball around you body shifts weight. This gives a challenge of staying on the cushion and passing the ball around. We have done similar activities with the single person ball movements. This is great for working on coordination and balance.
Cross the Body Toe Touch
This is a great activity for balance and cross body movement. As they touch their toes their weight will shift on the balance cushions and makes them work hard on the balancing part. By doing this you make a simple move slightly more complex.
Touch Your Toes
Touching your toes is a fun activity and the balance cushions make this a little more complex. You have to work on your balance and the shift of the pads as you lean forward. You will find that some times they might lean forward to much and fall off the pads. Challenge them to see what they need to do different to stay on the pads while touching their toes. The more they keep the weight on the heels of their feet the easier the activity will be.
Pass the Ball Between Your Legs
This is another change in balance as you move your body around to pass the ball. It is fun to do without the cushions but this adds something different. If this is easy for them you might try a small weighted ball that is around 1 pound and see if it makes a difference for them. They will see as they do this activity that their weight shifts from leg to leg.
