Spring is just around the corner, and that means spring breezes perfect for kite flying!  While we wait for sunnier weather, we are enjoying these easy to make Beaded Pipe Cleaner Kites!

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Kites

All you need to make some kites of your own are pipe cleaners and beads (ours are compliments of CraftProjectIdeas.com). We also used a pair of scissors, but they could be made without.

To start with form one pipe cleaner into a diamond shape. I did this by twisting the ends of the pipe cleaner and then creasing the center directly across from the twist.  Then pull out in the center of each side and make a cease to form the other corners.

Now for the inside of the kite we used a pipe cleaner cut in half. If you don’t have scissors to cut the pipe cleaner just double wrap a single pipe cleaner around twice. We threaded some beads on to add interest to our kite. Add another pipe cleaner for the tail.

And this is when the kids can really get creative. They decorated the kite tails however they wanted with a variety of beads. Beads all along the tail or maybe just a few; how about different shapes and colors. The girls wanted to personalize theirs even more by using letter beads to spell their names.

Then we bent the tails as if they were being blown in the wind; a little fishing line completes the look by suspending them in the air! They are even cheery in our window with the snow behind them. Of course looking at them makes us anxious to go out and fly some real kites!

So we wait, and despite our cold temperatures, we are ready to welcome spring with our colorful Beaded Pipe Cleaner Kites in the window!
