The Places You’ll Go End of School Year Activities - Enchanted Homeschooling Mom

Time really does fly when you are having fun! It’s hard to believe that summer is almost here and that another school year is coming to an end. Being homeschooled their entire academic careers I have always tried to make my children excited, proud, and full of sheer happiness that they completed another year in their educational journey.

Little Blue Engine End of the School Year Memories Train Craft

This year the kids and I are trying something a little different. I stumbled across the storybook I Knew You Could! A Book for All the Stops in Your Life (Little Engine That Could) at the bookstore recently and just fell in love with it. This book is perfect for any child from first grade all the way through college. Your favorite little blue train talks about making the transition in life from one step to another. This book just screamed make an end of the year craft to go along with it to me!

To make your own personalized Little Blue Engine End of the School Year Memories Train you will need:

  • 3 Toilet Paper Tubes
  • 8 Buttons
  • Cotton balls
  • Blue Paint
  • Paint of your choice
  • Popsicle Sticks
  • 1 silver pipe cleaner
  • 1 Photo of your child
  • 2 googly eyes
  • Permanent marker
  • Paint brush
  • Hot Glue

Once you have all the materials ready and your painting area protected, start by cutting off one end of one toilet paper tube off.  Make four cuts in the ‘ring’ and spread out the flaps.  Use hot glue and attach this ring to one end of a second toilet paper tube to make the smoke stack.  Once dry, cut a small area out of the back of the same tube to make a place for your engine and driver. Once that is done, it is now time to paint! Start by painting the engine section blue like this:

Then, it is time to start on the coal tender by painting it any color or colors you wish like this:

Then, allow the painted parts to dry.  Let them take as much time as needed to dry. Once they are dry, glue on some cotton balls to the inside of the ring smoke stack. Hot glue on the googly eyes to the front too.  Then, carefully cut out your child’s picture and glue it into the driver area. Then, cut the coal tender tube along the top to ‘open’ it up into a ‘U’ shape.  Glue on your buttons for wheels for your engine and tender. Flip both over and carefully hot glue a pipe cleaner to the bottom to link them.  Once the hot glue is dry, flip your train back over.

To complete this project, have your child think of about a dozen things that they are proud that they learned or want to remember about this school year.  Have them write short sentences on popsicle sticks.  Then, stack all the popsicle sticks in the tender you just made like this:

With the memories recorded, it is now time to enjoy your end of the year festivities!

I love the train – such a creative end of the year craft!

  • montessoricarrie

Love reflection for the child of things they are proud of themselves for! I would be tempted to add a few myself. The train is such a great celebration craft for kids that can never get enough craft projects! Growing up, the last day of school my mom would take us out for ice-cream. Nothing fancy, but still special. Just felt nice to have a little acknowledgement. As a teacher (my daughter isn't school age yet) I still feel like going for ice-cream on the last day of school. For the children in my class I do up a simple photo collage (3 photos, same design for each child to keep it simple for myself) of them working with various Montessori materials throughout the year. I print it up in an 8X10 photo with their name, the school name, and the school year on it. A special memento.

  • These are terrific ideas for the last few days of school. Thank you for sharing your free printable with us!
