I love using masking tape for lots of gross motor. It is easy to use. You can see some of the past posts I have done using them Side Ways Animal Walking, Using yarn Lines for Gross Motor or ABC Tape Letters. Those post use masking tape or can be done using masking tape.
What you need for this activity: masking tape.
Every now and then I set up a simple ladder for girls to jump, hop or skip over. They start with just jumping over each of the lines. Then jumping from line to line.
After a few run threw of the jumping and skipping, I change things up. This time we started with how many lines can you jump over. We start with just one, then two or three. Can you try for 4 lines? This gets the girls pushing themselves to see just what they can do.
The next challenge was to walk around the lines weaving in and around. This is simple and easy to do. Also make sure to change directions they are walking.
The next challenge is to do some animal walking across without touching the lines! If you need help looking for animal ideas check out the Gross Motor Printables on my site. A few animal movements the girls did were frog jumping, bear walking forwards and backwards. While they are doing their animal movement have them make the animal sounds. You could also ask them to use animals that they might see outside the window.
After they are used to avoiding the lines which can be hard depending on the movement, have them do the movements touching the lines! This makes things think and move slightly differently. Each movement is fun.
I challenged the girls to come up with a movement that would let them touch more than one line at a time without leaving the line before. They tried several different animal movements trying to guess what animal it would be. In the end they tried moving like a snake and it worked for them. This made them think.
The fun part about these gross motor activities they can be done in a small space and the kids LOVE it. They get to move and think about what they are doing. Challenge them and challenge yourself! Join in the fun jump, skip or do animal movements right along with them. I really enjoy these activities with them.
