This month I wanted to show you a fun gross motor activity you could do indoors during the winter or just indoors when you want it. You never know when your kids might need to burn off a little energy. I’m going to show you some great 2 foot and 1 foot jump courses that kids can do.
I love setting up little obstacle course for the girls to jump through. This is a great way to burn energy and perfect for winter!
Jumping feet together you jump on the stop two feet together on a single and two feet apart with presented with 2 spots. For the return trip you jumped feet wide and keep the cones between you feet. This is different from the normal hop scotch because you have to think about feet in and feet out. If they have problem with the jumping have them say feet in feet out as they jump. It helps them think about what they are doing.
After doings this a bit we changed up the cones to only have 3 and jumping over the cones. We still kept to the two feet jumping above.
This was just changing up a few things. We made the spots work like a traditional hop scotch. If they have problems with this change, then have them say two feet, one foot or two, one, two, one. We have also said two feet, right foot, two feet left foot. It may take them a few tries to get this after having done the two feet through the course. The other change is the cones are put in a zig zag pattern and you jump around the cones like skiing down a hill. When they land they should be looking at a cone in front of them and one right to the side of them.
You put all the spots in a circle. This is simple and easy jumping around in a circle. You can go around and around and switch direction and go the other way on the circle. We start clockwise and switch to counter clockwise. I have them call out the colors they jump on. After doing a few rounds, they can jump over spots on the circle. I give them a color or colors to hop over. It is fun and also makes them think about what color they are on.
One change for this is to replace some of the spots with cones and have them jump over the cones. This was the girls request for this activity. It got everyone moving and they had lots of fun with it. We did jumping around the cones as well.
One way to change all of these up is to reverse direction that you are jumping. It can trick the mind some times and gets them thinking. This is fun and easy to do. I do it with the girls as much as I can. They love when I join them for activities.
