Gravy on my Mashed Potatoes

My daughter Elizabeth and I were just over the moon to hear that the author of Matthew’s Monster’s and One Bright Monster, Stephanie Sisler, had released a new book. Gravy On My Mashed Potatoes is unlike either of her previous books, yet this book still uses Stephanie’s signature interactive storybook format.

Gravy On My Mashed Potatoes (which you could also consider the icing on the cake with the cake being Matthew’s Monsters and One Bright Monster) is a touching storybook that brings to life the people around our child’s life. This book is full of writing prompts that tackle family, emotions, and feelings. There are boxes where your child can glue pictures in to create a magical way for your child not only to practice their reading and writing skills; but also to create a family keepsake that they will treasure throughout their life. Here is just a pinch of some of the writing prompts included in this book:

  • About Me
  • Family Tree
  • My Wish

Here is my daughter Elizabeth doing several of the writing prompts. Being the budding artist that she is she opted to draw some of her pictures on some of the pages rather than use photographs that we have on hand.  So, to do this I gave her an index card for each of her illustrations. At the end of the book she ended up with some lovely photographs as well as her illustrations for her keepsake book.

What is your favorite memory with your child? I don't have kids, but my favorite memory with my students is the last day of the year when we place their "entering" and "exiting" portfolio next to each other and we can see all the progress they have made and growth that often gets missed in the day to day craziness!

This looks like a very fun, interactive book to get the imagination moving!

I have several, but one that involves our six older children (21, 20, 18, 15, 14, & 12) was our trip to Florida for my cousin's wedding in 2005. I still remember the looks on their faces as we entered Magic Kingdom. The entire trip was so much fun. I would love to win this for my little one (age 3). Thank you so much for the opportunity to win it.

  • looks like a great way to inspire young writers!

One of my wonderful memories with my child is going on nature walks together!
