When I first found out about the wonderful project that Growing Book by Book was putting together called Booking Across the USA, I knew that it was right up my alley. I love exploring our states through storybooks since the engaging nature of a storybook and project can draw a child’s interest right in and mold it for the lesson.

While I do not live in the glorious state of New Mexico I have visited this state frequently since my youth spending extended periods of time while visiting relatives. Sadly when you ask someone what state they would most like to visit New Mexico tends to be forgotten. There are so many hidden treasures, historical monuments and natural beauty that lies in this beautiful state! From the Puye Ruins to the Petroglyph National Monument to the glorious Hot Air Balloon Fiesta and more!

After digging through many books at my local library and finding some fantastic storybooks centered around New Mexico there was one story that I felt was a perfect fit for elementary students to wrap into learning about New Mexico. This storybook is Juan and the Jackalopeby Rudolfo Anaya. This traditional Southwestern tall tale brings many of New Mexico’s colorful tales to life all in one storybook.

To further enhance this magical tall tale I have created this free printable mini unit for children in grades 1st – 4th . In this mini unit your child will be asked reading comprehension questioning from the book, do a mapping activity, write their own tall tale in essay writing format, complete a hands on science activity where your child can create their very own hot air balloon, and create their very own Jackalope craft like this:

Here are some other fantastic storybooks centered around the state of New Mexico:

The Day It Snowed Tortillas: Tales from Spanish New Mexico

The Legend of the Poinsettia
