First of all, I want to thank Jill for having me over today!  I love Enchanted Homeschooling Mom and am very excited to be here!

This is the second week of my two-week blog tour celebrating the release of my new Ebook, Bears & Butterflies: 41+ Hibernation Activities!  As part of the celebration, I am visiting some amazing blogs, sharing free printables, and giving away a $10.00 Amazon Gift Card!!  Keep reading for more blog tour details!

Today I want to share a fun and easy science experiment that younger children will enjoy while older children can discuss it in more depth.  I call it Active Onions:

You will need:

  • a red onion
  • a small pot of boiling water
  • household items to test: baking soda, fresh squeezed lemon juice, vinegar, etc.
  • small cups, test tubes, or another container to put household items in
  • goggles

Procedures:

1- Chop a red onion and cook it in boiling water for about three minutes.  Strain the onions (and put them in something yummy).  Save the onion water.

2- Let your children wear goggles and supervise them placing about a tablespoon of each household object in the small cups or test tubes.  Add about a teaspoon of the onion water, and watch the color change!

What Happened:

Different chemicals react in different ways with each other.  Some bubble, some fizz, and some change colors.  Onion juice will change yellow-green in some mixtures and pink-purple in others.

{Note for parents/older children: onions contain anthocyanins which are sensitive to pH–onion juice will turn yellow-green in bases and pink-purple in acids.  Also note that pH color changes are a physical change–they can be reversed.  Try adding baking soda to your vinegar and see if you can change the color back!}

Blog Tour Details:

1- To celebrate the release of my new Ebook, Bears & Butterflies: 41+ Hibernation Activities, I will be visiting eight blogs from Jan. 28th-Feb. 9th.  Each blog tour “stop” will include a freebie or flash giveaway AND a chance to enter a drawing for the Amazon Gift Card!

2- Carla is also being so generous to everyone and allowing me to host a giveaway of 6 fossilized shark teeth that average in length approximately 1/2 inch. How cool would this be to add a hands on component to your shark unit! Just enter the Rafflecopter below to win:

3- To enter the drawing for the $10.00 Amazon Gift Card, just leave a relevant comment to this post!  (If your email isn’t in your public profile, include that in your comment too.)  Everyone who leaves a comment at a post on the blog tour will be entered in the drawing.  Since there will be eight stops, you will have eight chances to enter.  Visit Preschool Powol Packets for a schedule and more details.  A winner will be drawn on Saturday, February 9th.

Thank you again, Jill, for hosting me today!!

Carla at Preschool Powol Packets and I connected when I was first getting my cyber legs in this blogging world. She has always amazed me and is a creative force to be reckoned with (not to mention super sweet!). I suggest hopping on over and following along with her site for fun activities that always keep coming. I have always loved her hands on science experiments!
