I hope that you have enjoyed following along with our lessons and activities centered around Thanksgiving this month. Beck and Elizabeth have been busy little bee’s finishing up all of our learning before we take a much needed 2 week Thanksgiving break from school. We are loving the flexibility of year round homeschooling! It was hard starting school in July but being able to take chunks of time off at Halloween and Thanksgiving is really nice!

Videos we watched:
Discovery Education: America Celebrates, Rabbit Ears: Squanto and the First Thanksgiving, Animated Heroes: William Bradford. (*Interesting note: several of these videos can be found on You Tube for free)
BrainPop Jr.: Thanksgiving

Scholastic: We took a  Virtual Field Trip of The Mayflower (

Pack a suitcase

Pack a suitcase: We packed out suitcase to go on the Mayfllower! I had the kids write down and draw items that if they think the Pilgrim boys and girls would have packed (or should have in certain cases). I found this idea on Pinterest and the orginial idea can be found at Babbling Abby.

To practice their new vocabulary words in this unit study Beck and Elizabeth matched the vocabulary words with their definitions after several days of reading the pocket chart cards (we had to put the pocket chart cards on the schoolroom door since our pocket charts are filled at the moment):

First Thanksgiving Vocabulary

Each day this week they practiced learning about their new First Thanksgiving themed vocabulary words but playing an Education Cubes Bingo game (who ever filled up their card first won the game) that had many different versions that tested their memory of not only the word but the definition as well:

Map of the Mayflower voyage

Elizabeth made a map to show the Mayflower’s journey (and insisted on including Plymouth Rock)(this idea came from Evan-Moor). She also wrote a report about what she learned about The First Thanksgiving.

Elizabeth Writing Assignment

Beck wrote a report from the stand point of being a Pilgrim boy who had just landed on New Plymouth and how he would build a home. I felt that this tied in nicely with the Pilgrim house that we made last week.
